Month: February 2004

  • I really enojy this blog by Mike02. Really I enojy all his entries, even though he posts so often in the course of a day, sometimes I miss a few. He says the things everyone else is too afraid to say about the news and politics. If Mike was running for president, I’d vote for him. He’s like the George Carlin of the blogging community.

Currently he’s commenting on the Consitutional Amendment that Bush is trying to foist on the public. This isn’t a new topic. People have been talking about it for weeks, but Mike made note of some ulterior motives that come into play with this nonsense. He says, “Bush knows that he will never get a CA [constitutional amendment] passed, it’s very difficult, through the congress, ratified by the states, yadda, yadda, yadda.  When Newt and company tried passing the Contract with America in the early 90′s they threw in term limits as a CA [constitutional amendment] knowing full well it wouldn’t get anywhere. Bush is doing the same.”

Mike02 intimates that Bush is doing this to please his loyal religious/homophobic supporters and motivate them to vote for him. And he’s also doing it to link Democrats with gay marriage so that anyone who would have voted democrat will vote republican if gay marriage displeases them.

I can come up with at least one more reason.

Notice we haven’t heard about Bush’s actions in the Middle East of late. All this gays shouldn’t marry nonsense is clearly a distraction. Really, so long as they’re not hurting anyone, gays should be allowed to do whatever the heck they want. This is supposedly a free country after all. But maybe it’s just a little freer for some folk than others.

They (Bush and his regime) used 9-11 as an excuse to launch a war in the Middle East despite the fact that they knew something was going to happen long before that moment and intentionally failed to prevent it. They wanted something to happen so that they would have a superficial reason to attack people who had nothing to do with 9-11. Boy did they mess up.

Yes, the terrorists came from the middle east and needed to be stopped, but waging war on innocent people who just happened to share their religion was just as much a violation of human rights as Saddam’s inhumane rule and Bin Laden’s actions against us.

This needs to be remembered by anyone who might think to vote for Bush in the upcoming election. I don’t care who the heck you vote for, just don’t vote for him.

The only reason he is not as big a sociopath as Saddam and Bin Laden is that his hands are tied by social conformity. He is a hate-mongering bigot who should not be given the power to control other people’s lives, ours or the lives of people in other countries.

We (everyone I’ve ever spoken to) didn’t vote for him the first time. We sure as heck don’t want him in again. I really don’t see how he can get re-elected short of fraud (everyone remembers Florida, yes?). Is this all a conspiracy to undermine our faith in the electoral system so everyone stops voting entirely? I wouldn’t be surprised.

    I will say finally…

There is no reason to limit the rights of gays, any more than there is reason to limit other minority groups… like African Americans, non-Christian religious groups, unwed mothers, etc etc etc etc.

Really if you want my opinion, I’m heterosexual (for want of a better label) but I can say without irony that we should probably encourage homosexuality. We have some 6 billion people on this planet… eating up resources, destroying natural wonders like the rainforest and the oceans, killing one another over territory and supplies. Don’t you think homosexuality is a reasonable choice over abortion and birth limitations like you find in China? Not everyone can be a thirty year old virgin like me. heh

  • I’m going to be the big three-oh on March 3rd, so I thought I’d do a birthday themed newsletter this week. The feature article for the week covers the origins of birthday celebrations. And something I learned in writing the article… the Greeks and Romans believed we were born with a guardian spirit which connected us to whatever deity held the day as sacred. That’s something I’ve always thought, but hadn’t read anywhere before. Could this point to a past life in Rome or Greece? hmmmm

Anyway, I gathered together some funny jokes and some interesting links for this week’s Birthday newsletter. For the otherkin and fair lovers among us, check out fairylove.com. Anyone want to buy me some wings for my b-day? Also check out their beautiful calendar for 2004. If I didn’t already have a calendar for the year, I know what I’d be getting. If you’ve not yet had your fill of birthday information, or you’re planning a party for someone, check out Birthday Celebrations.net. If you’ve always felt you should have a twin, check out the Astro-twin base to see if anyone else was born on the same date as yourself. And finally, if you’re wondering about man’s strides toward a longer life, you might be interested in some of the articles found on the Immortality Institute website.

                                You're a pantser!

You’re a pantser, someone who “writes by the seat of her pants.” You’re the type of a writer who has a brilliant story idea, and runs with it. You’re very creative, with the source of your creativity in spontaneity. Outlines bring you down, and you could never write a story if you knew ahead of time how it was going to end. You’re a free spirit who writes as whimsy inspires you without worrying overly much what others will think.

  • Wow, a dream after so many days without… and it wasn’t even a particularly strange dream. My mother, her boyfriend, and myself were driving around in the country when our car broke down outside this farm. So we walked in to ask if it was alright if we hung out for a while as we waited for someone to come to tow and fix the car.

We entered and walked down a wide hall to an office with huge windows where the owner sat. My mom went in to talk to him, and as I turned there were three wide steps the length of the room.

The building was much bigger on the inside than out… you know, standard dream physics. heh Light poured in through huge windws, and the ceiling was very high and airy. But you could tell the building had seen better days. There were cracks and crevices in the walls and ceiling. And there were some huge spiders, as big as my spread hand from thumb tip to pinky tip. There was one high up on the wall the color of wet clay, and another near my feet a kind of steel-gray color. Spiders don’t usually bother me, but these were frikkin humungous spiders, so I was a little wary of them in the dream.

The room was pretty much empty, but beyond it was a large doorway and then a room full of old books in piles. I started to go down, and my mother came out and said it was alright to wait there. Then she saw me going down the stairs and tried to call me back, but I told her it was obvious that it wasn’t a farm, but a used bookstore instead. She was like, oh, yeah, ah duh. lol

So we went down to look through the books. (You know at this point I don’t know what happened to her boyfriend. Maybe the spiders ate him. heh) As we reached the books, another wide door came into view with racks of clothes. Since I didn’t find anything interesting among the books, I went through to the clothes. (At this point I lost track of my mom.)

Past the clothes, it was a complete maze with paths going every which way though one room so big I couldn’t see the extent of it. I found an interesting outfit, a pair of pants -one side turquoise and the other black- with suspenderesque straps, which I decided to buy.

I kept walking and the whole place turned into the Bizarre world I dream about sometimes. I arrived at one spot with these little old ladies selling Jimmy cakes (kind of an apple pudding cake), but was shocked to realize these were MY jimmy cakes. lol I’ve only made a jimmy cake once, but in my dream I had made all 2 dozen or so of the cakes they were offering. I was kind of annoyed that they were trying to sell me my own cakes, so I kept walking. I went up a little hill and found another woman selling pies. I got a slice of apple pie instead.

At that point I woke up.

  • Oy I’m bad… I completely forgot to post the Newsletter link yesterday. Tsk. This week’s Ancient Whispers newsletter topic is enchantments. I got into a discussion of this topic on one of my email lists and thought my answers compiled into an essay would make a great newsletter theme. This week’s craft instructs you on how to make simple charms and you can find more instruction in the Sites of Interest.

Funny thing, when I did the calendar for the newsletter this time, I was a week ahead of myself. I’m thinking I’m subconsciously eager for my birthday on the 3rd of March. But why would I be eager for my 30th birthday I ask you?? lol Still, interesting syncronicity… I’ll be 30 on the 3rd day of the 3rd month. Groan… I’m old! Wahhhhhhh lol

  • I recently subscribed to a really thought provoking blog- o_tempora_o_mores. He’s got some great religious discussions going on over there.

Anyway, his mention of evolution got me to thinking about physical and spiritual evolution. I find it absurd that there are people who still can’t even accept the possibility of physical evolution. Some areas won’t even allow it to be taught in their schools yet and penalize teachers that show common sense and break their absurd rules.

I mean, how do they think fossils found their way into the rock layers? Odd mineral formations? Divine joke? Intentional hoax? Alien practical joke? Oops, forgot, aliens don’t exist either. The world and all the expansive universe is empty of any intelligent life aside from humanity. It was all made for us. All the empty space in the macrocosm and all the empty space in the microcosm between our ears… well the ego is mostly hot air right?

I know it’s a little hard to imagine our farthest ancestors only had a cell to to their names, but is it so hard to imagine our closer ancestors as furry apes with clubs? Heck, there are still people walking around who look they just fell out of a tree -with grammar to suit. At our basest, we’re just killer apes with occasional good fashion sense.

If people cannot accept the idea of physical evolution, there’s little hope that they’ll accept reincarnation (spiritual evolution) any time soon. But on the other hand, even those who have embraced the idea of physical evolution tend to dismiss the idea of reincarnation -as if accepting a scientific explanation for life excludes the idea of a soul or its development. Individuality and intelligence are a quirk of evolution. In fact, intelligence is explained as a kind of insanity according to some scientists. Well, I’ve never denied I’m nuts. But I’m pretty certain I’m not alone! lol

The way I see it, there are two types of progress -physical and spiritual. Both take a long time before you get anywhere, but it’s not the journey that’s important, it’s the destination. But evolution affects reincarnation and vice versa. Things change, the change allows for greater diversity, greater diversity allows for more experience, and more experience contributes to a greater depth of spiritual growth, growth in spirit promotes physical change as souls are reborn. It’s the much touted, often misunderstood, “circle of life.”

I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see whether experience wins out over dogma, religious or scientific.

  • Well finally my comic is updating again. It’s sad the way I go into unproductive mode when I’m waiting on something to happen. I could have used the week of keenspace withdrawal to get a little backlog going, or caught up on reading, or gosh, even written more.

What did I do? I caught up on sleep.

Yeah I was sleeping. Note the waning of updates here. In fact, I got so much sleep I had whiplash insomnia last night and had to take some tylenol PM to help me sleep. (I had a little headache too, so I wasn’t abusing the meds!  Never fear!)

I didn’t even have any dreams while I did all that sleeping.

I know sleeping a lot is sign of depression, but honestly I don’t feel depressed. Compared to how I used to feel when I was working at the bank, I’m practically euphoric. I’ve actually lost twenty pounds since getting the job at the bookstore. I’m sure it’s got a lot to do with the fact I’m not sitting on my rump forty hours a week, but it must also have something to do with my better mood, don’t you think? I gained a whopping thirty-five pounds in the three years I worked at the bank, and I’ve lost twenty in the four months I’ve worked at the bookstore. Gee, I hope I can keep this up.

Well, so my comic is updating again. I was finally able to FTP yesterday, so today’s comic is up, and I updated the features and fanart section too. Not that I get any fanart (hint hint), but I posted a link to it which leads to my deviant art page.

Oh, and for those interested in the Necronomicon… I present to you the Necronomicontest. It looks really cool. I’m thinking of drawing something for it.

  • This week’s newsletter explores the origins of Valentine’s Day. Though named for a 3rd century Roman priest, the holiday has much older origins in the celebration of Lupercalia. You can learn more about Lupercalia and Valentine traditions from all over the world in this week’s article. There are some great gift ideas and activities in this week’s Sites of Interest, as well as some yummy recipes. And for a good laugh, don’t neglect this week’s jokes and “cartoon.”

  • Congrats to Joyous and SilverRavenKat, the winners of last week’s word game. Joyous came closest to the actual meaning of the word, while SilverRavenKat used longueur in a paragraph.

A longueur is a tedious passage or section of a work of literature or performance. Though the word comes from the Old French “longor” meaning a protracted or extended discussion, its root stems from the Latin “longus” meaning long.

This means SilverRavenKat is in the lead with four points and Joyous has two. LasaGrl and Jellybean71 each have one point.

This week’s word is : cullet (noun)

Hint: think of thinning a herd of animals, but be aware it has nothing whatsoever to do with livestock

Now remember, don’t look the word up, but try to come up with a definition. If you do know what it means all the better. Then use it in a sentence, paragraph, or short story. One-point for the closest definition and one for the most creative use. Post the solution on your blog (and tell me about it here!), and I’ll link back to it when I choose the “winner.”

I had a very short dream last night. I was a male captain of a space ship and this other guy on a space station was trying to rent out some slaves to me. I was completely scandalized by the idea of slavery and asked how any civilized being could condone the existence or use of slaves. How did any being have the right to control another being’s life? The guy who was trying to rent them to me got a little huffy and explained that he took good care of them, gave them food, a home, and training. He said they were happier for not having to make any choices and I had no cause to criticize an honest businessman.

I’m not sure, but I think this was a subconscious commentary on how people let the media lead them around by the nose. Aren’t most people just slaves of the airways, letting tv and radio tell them what to think and how to act. They like being told exactly what to think, not having to question, having every answer at the press of a button. Sheep, slaves, not much difference. But if they’re happy, I guess I shouldn’t criticize…

  • Hmmm, I’m sending (have sent) an email to Lindisfarne Press to ask after the short story I sent them in December. What do you think?

    Hi _____,

I was just wondering whether you’d gotten to look at the short story “Inheritance” I sent to you on Decemeber 1st. I really wasn’t sure how long I should wait before getting nervous. I don’t like to be a pest either, so please let me know if I’m annoying you by asking no matter if you’ve gotten to it or not. Of course, if you thought it was utter drek and you weren’t sure how to tell me to creep back under my rock, let me know that too. I’m sure it would be something I’d need to know for future reference. heh

Was it too self-depreciating? Will he think I’m a nutjob and automatically move my story to the circular file?

    Inquiring minds want to know…

Even though it began way back on January 22nd, I decided in honor of the Chinese New Year to theme this week’s newsletter on Dragons. Get some insight on dragons from around the world in the Sites of Interest, or if you collect figurines, check out the Rose Goddess Store for some lovely examples.

This week’s article gives you the nitty-gritty on Oriental dragons. The Craft for the week is an Egg Carton Dragon suitable for all ages. I found a couple of dragon jokes and a funny poem for your enjoyment. This week’s cartoon is actually an optical illusion. See if you can find all three images in the picture. (Hint: one of them is a dragon.)

  • Ahhhhhhh, well, my comic is back up but is not updating, and the FTP is not working. So it may be some time before it does update. Last thursday’s comic is flying out in limbo and tomorrow’s comic cannot be uploaded. Ack, way to stick everyone with a cliff-hanger.

Still, at least it’s up and people can peruse the archives if they wish and use the links to other comics. Growl growl growl, if it wasn’t a free site, I might feel more justified in being upset. Wish they’d give more updates on the status of the problem though.

I recently discovered The Tribes webcommunity. The various “tribes” remind me somewhat of yahoogroups, but you can make connections on an individual basis too. Anyway, thought I’d mention it and post the link (which is also an invite to link to me if you join or are already a member of The Tribes).

I wanted to thank everyone for their supportive words. I still don’t know what I’m going to do, but I’m not quite so depressed as I was. It helps that my comic has come back up, even if it’s not updating. I’m considering a move to live with my sister in Illinois, but since she will soon be moving herself, it would be best to wait on that. Still it’s not even close to an ideal situation.

I’m hoping to get enough from my tax return that I’ll be able to pay off my car loan. If I do decided to go to Illinois, I hate the thought of leaving such a large bill over a thousand miles behind me.

I know you must be thinking that I could use the return to rent a place, but it would run out pretty quickly I think, and I’d be back at square one.

Why oh why can’t some unknown rich relative die and leave me a fortune and a mansion?? Is that too much to ask? And I’d definitely invite you all to come stay with me and maybe share the wealth too (if there’s enough).

Oh, and the newsletter might be late this week. I haven’t had the energy to work on it much and I have errands to run tomorrow.
