  • Congrats to Joyous and SilverRavenKat, the winners of last week’s word game. Joyous came closest to the actual meaning of the word, while SilverRavenKat used longueur in a paragraph.

A longueur is a tedious passage or section of a work of literature or performance. Though the word comes from the Old French “longor” meaning a protracted or extended discussion, its root stems from the Latin “longus” meaning long.

This means SilverRavenKat is in the lead with four points and Joyous has two. LasaGrl and Jellybean71 each have one point.

This week’s word is : cullet (noun)

Hint: think of thinning a herd of animals, but be aware it has nothing whatsoever to do with livestock

Now remember, don’t look the word up, but try to come up with a definition. If you do know what it means all the better. Then use it in a sentence, paragraph, or short story. One-point for the closest definition and one for the most creative use. Post the solution on your blog (and tell me about it here!), and I’ll link back to it when I choose the “winner.”

I had a very short dream last night. I was a male captain of a space ship and this other guy on a space station was trying to rent out some slaves to me. I was completely scandalized by the idea of slavery and asked how any civilized being could condone the existence or use of slaves. How did any being have the right to control another being’s life? The guy who was trying to rent them to me got a little huffy and explained that he took good care of them, gave them food, a home, and training. He said they were happier for not having to make any choices and I had no cause to criticize an honest businessman.

I’m not sure, but I think this was a subconscious commentary on how people let the media lead them around by the nose. Aren’t most people just slaves of the airways, letting tv and radio tell them what to think and how to act. They like being told exactly what to think, not having to question, having every answer at the press of a button. Sheep, slaves, not much difference. But if they’re happy, I guess I shouldn’t criticize…
