  • Modern Coliseums

As I was preparing my lunch today, my mother’s boyfriend my stepdad was watching Jerry Springer. It occurred to me that day time talk shows, like Jerry Springer, are the modern equivalent of the Roman coliseums… with audiences calling for blood even as the “guests” cut at one another with their words and deeds. We try to act as if we are so superior to our ancient ancestors, but we really have not come so far as we like to think. It makes me wonder if, back in the day, the coliseums had conscientious objectors just as today we have people who refuse to watch any daytime television or television at all. I know I’d rather read a book than watch the garbage on tv. There’s nothing I watch with any regularity any more. In fact, I’d say it’s been a good week since I turned the tv on for more than a few seconds to check the time or weather forecast. I’d rather listen to my IPod than the tv.

My dependence upon my IPod makes me think of those who have criticized them and personalized technology because they say it isolates people from one another. I suppose they’d rather go back to the 80s and have me carry a “boombox” on my shoulder so I could share my music with everyone?? heh Still, I have to admit that I am a bit inclined to remove myself from society and insulate myself in my own little world. But I am as much inclined to observe society as it passes me by as I am to ignore it. That said… I’m sharing an A-Z music list as I’ve seen a few other people doing lately. See, I share! I’m not that misanthropic! lol

  • What – people acutally do not like ipod? C R A Z Y

  • The one and only time I saw Jerry Springer’s show I was blown away that people would actually keep tuning it in.  Eeek!  Attn People:  Put the remote down and back away from the TV.  Run don’t walk to the nearest fresh air you can find.  Breathe deep.  Now, isn’t that better.  You just weren’t getting enough oxygen to your brain. (she drags her soapbox off the screen)

  • Butthole Surfers AND Skinny Puppy. You totally gained even more cool points with me :)

I haven’t watched Springer in forever, but I accidently caught part of his security guy, Steve Wilko, on his own show. OMG. Almost as bad, without the fake questions and fake fights.

  • There were people who objected to the games in the Colosseum, but not that many I don’t think.  Modern entertainment is a lot like the Roman games, but on the plus side we don’t actually kill anyone in movies or on TV.  Much.

Who doesn’t like iPods?  If you want to talk to people, you can just put one of the earphone speakers in one ear and listen to people with the other ear.  Problem solved!

  • there is way too much garbage on television.  and what’s not garbage are reruns that you have watched way too many times.  i personally stopped my cable account and couldn’t be bothered. i am fortuante to live in an apartment complex where they have basic cable downstairs in the basement.  and even then i commit myself to shows that i truly enjoy (even though it is also true that ‘fraiser’ is a rerun).  i used to be addicted to reality shows but the ones that i only ‘allow’ myself to participate are with ‘survivor’ and ‘the apprentice’.  of course, a guilty pleasure of mine is ‘the bad girls club’.  but really, that’s about all the nonsense i can take.  i can’t even watch the news anymore and rather enjoy it from a comical point of view like ‘the daily show with jon stewart’ and ‘the colbert show’.

oddly enough, i can’t seem to get my attention to read any books.  i am really a reading type of person but i just can’t think of any thing to buy…any suggestions?  (note, i dislike fiction).

  • @wunderkind348 - Not sure what kind of non-fiction you like, but my tastes run towards history and more esoteric titles. The most interesting non-fiction book I’ve read in a while was The Secret History of the World as laid down by the secret societies. You have to take it with a grain of salt, but it was an interesting read. If you like biographies, I just read a good one about Boudica, the Celtic queen who fought the Romans, and there’s a book in the Women’s study section called Escapethat’s been on and off the bestsellers since it came out about a woman who escaped the Mormons. There’s also that book about the Amish called Amish Gracethat came out after the school shooting.

  • Up until 2 weeks ago, I commuting an hour and a half to work each way. I swear that the only way I got through that commute was because of my I-pod and a good book. Sometimes it’s good to be able to drown everything out!

  • that’s an adorable unicorn   and i don’t even care that it’s no white.  i ran into the last unicorn movie today.  someone keeps messing that particular movie up on it’s rack.  everytime i pass it i have to fix it.  i use to watch it all the time when i was young (7 ish) and my bfriend would rent it too.  i’m sure it got on our parents nerves.
the only daytime show i know of that is really bad is jerry springer.  i can’t stand it actually.  the things i like to watch are usually phantasy in nature like ghost whisperer, medium, and all the discovery national geographic type channels along with some old sitcoms like everyone loves raymond, friends, and similar shows.  i usually always have the tv on but am usually doing my computer stuff so it’s basically in the back ground.
