  • Midsummer’s Eve

    Summer Solstice

Solstice” is derived from “sol,” meaning sun, and “sistere,
to stand still. As the summer solstice
approaches, the noonday sun rises higher and higher in the sky on each
successive day, but on the day of the solstice, it rises an imperceptible amount compared to the day before, and so it is said to stand still.
In some languages solstices and equinoxes begin or separate the
seasons; in others, they are the center points. This is so with the Summer Solstice, also
known as Midsummer. The exact date and time of the Summer solstice varies every year, occurring on or about the 21st of June when the Sun enters zero degrees Cancer. This year solstice occurs today (June 20th) at 7:59PM. Due to the Celtic tradition of counting days from sundown to sundown, it is customary to begin feasting the night before the holiday. In the Christian religion, June 23rd is St John’s Eve, commemorating
the birthday of St John the Baptist. He is the only saint remembered
for his birth day rather than the day of his death, but this date was
adopted by early Christian clergy in an effort to attract more
parishioners just as the date of Christmas was adopted to detract from
    Yule.

Summer Solstice or Midsummer’s Eve is the longest day of the year and the shortest night. There are many other names for this holy day however. Midsummer’s Eve is only one of the most common. The name of Litha is a fairly recent appellation based on a Saxon word simply meaning opposite Yule. Alban Hefin, Alban Heruin Light of
    the Shore
, All-couples day, Feast of Epona, Feill-sheathain, Gathering Day, Johannistag,
Mean Samhraidh, Sonnwend, and Thing-Tide are other names. In Spain, this night is called “Night of the Verbena (vervain).”

In England, large bonfires are lit after sundown which serve the double purpose of illuminating the revelers and warding off evil sprites. Next to Samhain, Midsummer’s Eve is one of the favored times of the “Other Folk.” One can assume that the bonfires, also called the “Fires of Heaven,” were originally meant to strengthen the sun, whose time in the sky begins to diminish now as the days pass. Such bonfires are also referred to as Need-Fire, Living-Fire, and
Wild-Fire. Kindled with fern and pine needles, a combination of nine
woods combine to make the fire. These include hazel, oak, apple,
alder, birch, holly, willow, aspen, and ash. Other traditions like the flaming wheel and swinging a burning tar barrel may also be seen as an attempt to strengthen the dying sun.

The practice of lighting the Midsummer’s Eve bonfires was referred to as “setting the watch,” and people would leap over the flames for luck. In many cultures, it is customary to burn a straw effigy over the fires. This may be emblematic of the funerary rights held for Balder and other dying gods of the season. In Norway, the bonfires were called Balder’s Balefires. Herds of cattle are driven through the ashes to bless them and keep them free from harm. Later, the cold ashes from the bonfires were scattered over the fields to ensure their continued health and future productivity. A procession of people known as the “marching watch” carrying cressets (pivoting lanterns atop poles) and accompanied by Morris Dancers, six hobby horse riders, and other players dressed as a unicorn and a dragon would wind from bonfire to bonfire.

At this time of year, it is customary to gather certain herbs for drying. Many can benefit from being dried over the Midsummer’s Eve bonfire or at least being passed through its smoke. Birch, fennel, St John’s wort, and white lilies are traditional decorations used in the warding of the home against evil, and they are best hung over the door. Five plants are thought to be most powerful if gathered Midsummer’s Eve. These are roses, rue, St John’s wort, vervain, and trefoil. Mistletoe is also of special import at this time. As the instrument of Baldur’s death, the Norse god of summer, Mistletoe is most powerful at Midsummer, the day of his death. Other powerful herbs are chamomile, chickweed, chicory, cinquefoil, figwort, heartsease, hemp, lavender, meadowsweet, and mugwort. It was typical to dry nine herbs over the Midsummer’s Eve fires, and these could be selected from the herbs above.

This is also one of the best times of the year to collect a variety of magickal paraphernalia. The June full moon is called the Honey Moon because this is one of the most appropriate times to collect the bees’ gold. Sound familiar? June is named for Juno, goddess of weddings (among other things). The Honey Moon was typically the time for newly weds to celebrate, drinking mead as an aphrodisiac. Mead is brewed from the collected honey at this time (about 10 days before the solstice) and drunk during the celebration. Honey can also be kept on the alter during June rituals, and you may use it to dip your cakes.

Birds of all sort, especially water birds, are sacred as solar symbols, as are stags, oxen, and horses. Water as a healing elixir is also a solar symbol, carrying the energy of the sun for those who need it. In ancient times, offerings of glass, pottery, coins, stones, wooden figures, and gold charms were given at sacred springs, lakes, and wells, and their accompanying sacred trees were decorated with flowers and ribbons while people danced and feasted. These sacred waters were used for divination as well as healing, and the water was gathered to sprinkle over the fields and gardens for the blessing of rain and health. If you don’t have access to sacred springs, ocean water is one source of magickal water which can be used on your altar. Rain water can be collected if you are not near the sea. The more electrical energy in the storm, the more powerful the water will be. (NOTE -Keep your water in a glass or porcelain jar (avoid metal), and store it on a shelf. Keeping it on the floor will ground it and make it useless for your purposes.) Adding shells, rocks from the sea, and other non-perishable sea items will keep the energy in the water higher longer.

Spells to divine your future mate are typical for Midsummer’s Night. One of the simplest spells involves wearing goldenrod during the waxing of the June moon. You will glimpse your future love the following day. To divine more about your future lover, you might try twisting off the stem of an apple while reciting the alphabet. When the stem finally breaks, the letter you end on is the first letter of your true love’s name. Dipping an article of clothing in “fair water” (very clear or rose water) is another way to receive a vision of your future mate. Turn it inside out and lay it on a chair in front of a fire. Place some wine and a bit of salt near the fireplace. If you remain silent, eventually the image of your true love will appear to turn your clothes around and drink a toast to you. Men, don’t feel left out. At midnight, a man may go to a churchyard or holy place with a sword. Circling the area nine times (presumably clockwise though my references don’t specify), he must say, “Here’s the sword; where’s the sheath?” On the ninth turn, his beloved is said to appear and steal a kiss.

Another tradition at this time of year was to attempt to make vigil for this, the shortest night of the year. Success was a mixed blessing. Death was one possibility, madness another, but poetic inspiration was the ultimate goal, some might say a form of divine madness all its own. Keeping vigil in an ancient stone ring was often recommended for such an undertaking, but drawing a circle to sit in could work as well.

Snakes were particularly active at this time. In ancient Britain, it was said that as they gathered to mate, they would roll themselves into a tight ball, and a ball of hardened foam was the result. Called the glain naidr “serpent’s glass,” “serpent’s egg,” or “druid’s egg,” it is very powerful, allowing its owner to gain access to kings and win lawsuits. In the reign of Claudius Caesar, a Roman citizen was put to death for carrying such a charm to court. Obtaining the charm was no easy matter however. The snakes did not give it willingly. As they writhed, they would throw the ball into the air. The prepared observer could catch the ball in his cloak before it had a chance to shatter, but he had to be fleet of feet. The snakes would quickly turn on him. Only running water would bar their path. Pliny described the serpent’s egg as about the size of an apple, “with cartilaginous skin covered with discs.” Many folklorists and scholars consider this a fossil echinus (sea urchin), which has been found in many Gaelic tombs and which may indicate a snake cult of some kind. Rings or beads of glass found in Wales, Cornwall, and the Highlands have also been called “serpent’s glass” and were thought to have been formed in the same way. These along with ancient spindle-whorls called “adder stones” were said to have the ability to ward off snake attacks.

Along with snakes, the fay folk were very active on this night. In order to see them, you could gather fern seed (pollen) at midnight to rub on your eyelids. Rue carried in your pocket would protect you from their tricks and being “pixie-led.” Turning your jacket inside out was another way to protect yourself. Keeping to the ley lines or crossing living (running) water also protected against malevolent spirits. Incidentally, Balder was considered the god of the fay folk in Norse mythology. In Norway, a type of toadstool was thrown into the bonfires by the spectators in order to protect against trolls. If any trolls are nearby, the toadstools will reveal them.

    June 20th

On Midsummer’s Eve there is feasting, fires, songs, and dances. Bonfires are kindled on high hills to commemorate the high point of the year. The barrier between the living and the dead is very thin at this time. Fire was used to ward off evil spirits and St John’s wort would also drive evil specters away. Fern seeds protected from evil witchcraft, but also allowed young women to divine their future mates. Scattering the seeds at midnight, a woman was instructed to peek over her shoulder to catch a glimpse of her future husband.

This is the longest day of the year and a time of sanctity. Alban Hefin is sacred to the Mother Goddess, personified as Cerridwen. The Litha celebration includes fires lit to allow the smoke to waft over everything it is meant to bless. Burning sunwheels, blazing brands spun in circles from chains, and flaming tar barrels sent down the hill were once common before the introduction of fire works. Burning torches can be carried around buildings, gardens, and fields to endure their good fortune.

Among the Asatru, Balder the beautiful and Thor and his wife Sif are honored on the solstice.

The eve of the summer’s solstice also marks the martyrdom of Iron Skegge. He was tortured on the orders of the Christian king Olaf Tryggvason but refused to give up his faith in the gods.

The solstice is known as Geshi in Japan. Prayers are offered as protection and purification from the heat and disease of Summer.

The day of All Heras honors women’s mysteries. It honors those who have achieved full communion with the Mother of All Things. A hera was often the guardian of a Temple, community, or village.

  • Another short entry

Finally I finished Alhazred… a disappointing finish. 600+ and it pretty much stops in the middle of the story. Grrr. That makes the historical inaccuracies all the more annoying. I am not pleased.

Now I am reading the new Hellboy novelization. I liked the first movie novelization by Yvonne Navarro. I had not heard of the author before, but it was well done and much creepier than the movie turned out to be. Of course, reading the book and seeing the movie turned me on to the comic which I now collect (among others). I’ve read the intervening Hellboy novels and been more or less impressed with them, especially Emerald Hell, which was the book that came out prior to The Golden Army…. very deep south ghost story. Fun! In total there are nine Hellboy novels, not to be confused with the graphic novels, and this new one is the first one I haven’t liked. It backtracks a lot, repeating cannon from the first movie that is not cannon from the comics or other novels. And the author’s style is a bit simplistic. So… not impressed, but reading it anyway because the story has fairies and environmental issues.

I am only three chapters in, so maybe it gets better. Of course, I could have done a lot better but no one asked me.

There’s a (totally campy) environmental website for the new movie too
    HETFET.ORG

    Enjoy!

Now I must go watch Cool Air, which I bought four days ago and haven’t watched because I was reading Alhazred. Then I can read some more of The Golden Army… and then maybe I’ll clean, because I haven’t in quite some time.

    June 19th

In ancient Rome, the Day of All Heras began tonight in honor of the Goddess within as well as all wise women.

(Tomorrow is Midsummer’s eve! If you have any herbs, this is considered one of the best times to harvest, so plan ahead. Also, it is said that herbs harvested at this time and dried over the Midsummer’s eve bonfire are most potent!)

  • WCFQ 9b: Time Enough At Last

What would you do if you were the last person on earth?
    TheBigSeige

I don’t know if anyone’s ever seen the old Twilight Zone episode where Burgess Meredith survives the destruction of the world, finally having the time to read all the books he never had time to read when everyone was still running around a mile a minute, only to break his coke-bottle thick glasses. That would be me, mostly likely.

In actuality, I’d probably do my best to preserve as much of our culture as possible before succumbing to death myself. I’d travel around the world, emptying bank vaults of money and filling them with works of art and history. I used to work in a bank (worst job EVER), so I know that most of them are airtight… most have a 12 hour supply of air, and occasionally an oxygen tank if someone gets trapped in one longer than twelve hours. Bank vaults would be the perfect time capsules for my needs.

See chances are, even if another sentient race did not evolve after us on this world, eventually an alien race might discover our temperate little life-sustaining bubble and decide to colonize. For the sake of posterity… for the sake of at least one of our ideas being remembered and found useful by some other species, for the sake of our art simply being admired as art, I’d spend the rest of my life preserving all the things about my species that I admire. In the end, even if it was all for nothing, it would be an act of hope and a life defining purpose. There’s not much more anyone can ask for, as the last member of their race or not.

In all honesty, I’d be sorely tempted to leave out the bad stuff… the wars, man’s inhumanity to man and nature, the degeneracy of our high ideals and spiritual beliefs into heavy handed pi$$ing matches… but that wouldn’t be fair. It wouldn’t give an accurate picture of who we were and besides, those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. Even if it were not their past, if knowledge of our failures were useful to the new race or the new settlers, then they’d be well served if I chose not to save face by omitting them.

In every vault, I’d leave a log of my life and the location of all my previous deposits of human lore as well as the next dozen or so vaults I planned to use. I’d make sure that even if one or more of the vaults were destroyed by time and circumstance, that enough would survive that the information they held would eventually be found and lead to more. And if it came to a point where I knew I was dying or too infirm to continue, my final act would be to find one last vault and pack myself in salt before poisoning myself to preserve myself for whatever race came after.

Last night I dreamed of tiny blue star-shaped flowers growing in the shade of some monument.
Maybe it was just a post in the ground. I don’t know that I paid any attention to it, but the flowers only grew in its shade and were the same color as these words. As I passed my hand over the flowers, little blue moths of the same color clung to my hand.

If there was more to the dream, I have forgotten it.

    ***********

I’d always thought it was a shame that I’d never have enough time to read every book before the end of my life. So many books have been written and are being written every day that it would be quite impossible to catch up even if I could quit my job and devote myself to reading full time. To think that when I was a child, I would skip school to read, skip meals to read, skip sleep to read… and then, suddenly to have no need to savor a good book because I could read it at a glance. How sad. All the joy has gone out of reading altogether. What was once one of my few pleasures is now as mundane as breathing.

True it makes me an expert in any field I try my hand at, but I have no reason to excel any more. It’s not a challenge. It’s not even satisfying. Reading was once as satisfying as a meal, as refreshing as a night’s rest. Now, it is nothing.

I’m trying my hand at heroing, but I feel a fool in spandex. Robes would probably be better. I think the other heroes, and villains, would laugh me off the field of battle if I wore the skintight sparkly duds other supers wear, not that I could probably win in anything but a battle of wits. I wonder if Dr Strange needs an assistant. I could read his books and be up to speed in no time. Then I could be a great vigilante superhero… but otherwise, reading books on martial arts will only tell me how it’s done, not undo years of sitting on my butt with a good book.

Still, I don’t think I’ll tell anyone what my powers are. Your super power is… reading? No, I don’t think I could bear the incredulous looks from the other heroes. I’d rather have them think I was super-smart, than a super cheat… because that’s how it feels. I feel like I’ve got all the benefits of being a genius without actually having to do any work. I mean, my superhero name will definitely be The Bibliophile… I just don’t want people to realize how ironic that really is.

  • Quiet day and I’ve got reading to do

So… after yesterdays huge post, I’m just going to post the link to chapter 2 of my webnovel and bid you all adieu. I’m reading a really interesting book, Alhazred, and despite a few problems with erroneous cultural/historical references, general author errors, and (relatively few) typos, it’s not a bad read. It is, however, a really thick book and until I finish it, I can’t really read anything else… because despite the few problems I have with it (which are usually turn offs for me in any book) the story is good.

    So…

    Tattoo
    My webnovel so far…

Chapter 1.1 in which Glory is not mindful of the store
Chapter 1.2 in which Glory is made to do something she would really rather not
Chapter 1.3 in which Glory thinks she might be sick
Chapter 1.4 in which Aaron makes a mistake
Chapter 1.5 in which Glory is made to see the error of her ways
Chapter 1.6 in which the circle remains unbroken

Chapter 2.1 in which Aaron makes another mistake

  • My continuing adventures in haircare

So making my own shampoo has worked out pretty well. Of course, as I continued to search the net for more information, I ran across even more scary details about comercial hair care products. Apparently most conditioners contain waxes and silicones which can coat the hair and contribute not only to heavy, limp hair but also to eventual hair loss! Yikes!

Silicone-based additives in conditioners have great detangling properties and give your hair a nice feeling of “slip.” So some of the conditioners that seem to work the best, are actually the worst for your hair in the long term. These ingredients (ending with -cone, -conol, or -xane) glue the ends of your hair together. Split ends are concealed, but the
damage is not eliminated. Eventually, the silicones form a waterproof
barrier on your hair that locks out moisture and leaves your hair dry,
particularly at the ends.  My ends became dry, brittle, “crunchy” and
straw-like… contributing to the development of more split ends! So when you switch to a silicone free conditioner, it will seem at first that your hair is getting worse.

In addition, there are specific regimens people with curly hair should follow. Namely, shampooing as little as possible. It’s recommended that people with curly hair should only shampoo about once a week. You still wet your hair and can use conditioner, but only shampoo once a week. Instead of scrubbing your hair when you shampoo, when you skip the shampooing step, you just scrub with the conditioner in. This is week two of trying this, any my hair is uber-curly. So curly that I lose 2-3 inches when it tightens up as it dries.

Another thing people with curly hair should Not do is brush their hair. After working conditioner into the hair, they should gradually comb through it with either a wide-tooth comb or their fingers from ends to the roots. Personally, I prefer my fingers. I tend to break combs, and it’s easier not to pull the hair with the more careful use of your fingers. The same can be done when your hair is dry. This preserves your curls where brushing would break them up.

Some more things you should do if you have naturally curly hair:

    • If your hair is very dry, leave the conditioner on your hair for 15 minutes or
longer while you go through the rest of
      your shower.
    • When you rinse your hair, leave some conditioner behind. Do the final rinse with cold water to seal the cuticle
and make it lay flat. This will increase shine and decrease
      frizz.
    • Squeeze out excess water and scrunch a few times with a towel, but do not rub it or wring with a towel. Microfiber towels or t-shirts are best for removing water as
they cause less frizz than terrycloth.
    • Apply any products at this point. Creams or pomades add definition and
moisture. Gels hold the curl. After you have scrunched or raked in products, shape the
hair with your fingers. Scrunch some more or twirl sections
around a finger for more defined curls.
    • Let your hair air dry. Try to avoid use of blow-dryers, hood
dryers, etc. as this will cause heat damage. If you must use a blow dryer, also use a diffuser, and only
blow dry your hair until it is about 80% dry.
    • Don’t touch your hair while it dries! This will only lead to
      fly aways and frizz!

So, ever frugal, I am using up the last of my conditioner, but then I will have to think about making my own. I could just look around for a conditioner that is silicone-free like Suave naturals, but who knows if they might not change their ingredients unannounced at some point as so many shampoos have done just when I got used to them.

Why is conditioning your hair important? Almost all kinds of hair need conditioning to some extent or the other. It is a very important aspect of the hair-care routine carried out to rejuvenate hair which is robbed of its
vitality by environmental and man-made abuse. Conditioning is a
restorative routine restoring body and bounce to limp hair. There are two kinds of body-building conditioners: the ones you rinse
out and the ones you leave in. Both work at adding bulk to the hair by
leaving some material on the hair shaft, polymer fibers and protein. Cream rinses do not add body but only soften
    the hair. Deep
conditioners contain large amounts of protein, and in order that these
proteins are absorbed, the deep conditioner should be left on the hair longer before rinsing. The protein targets damaged hair. Conditioners also help in reducing friction and removing dryness and adding moisture.

Some homemade conditioners I have found online:

    The All-purpose Conditioner Rinse
    1. 1 Teaspoon of Castor oil.
    2. 1 Teaspoon of Malt Vinegar.
    3. 1 Teaspoon of Glycerine.
    4. 1 Teaspoon of Shampoo.

The Castor oil gives body to hair, the vinegar restores the acid mantle, glycerin moisturizes the hair
and shampoo is the medium that blends the ingredients. Before washing
the hair, apply this mixture to the hair gently and leave it on for
about twenty minutes. Wash it out with clear water. BTW, glycerin is a natural byproduct of processing vegetable oils into fuel for cars. If you know someone who does this, they may be willing to give you the glycerin free or for very little.

    Conditioner for Shine and Sheen

Grate some onions and cabbage together and leave in a copper
container overnight. In the morning, add few drops of eau de cologne to
remove the onion smell. Add few drops of a herbal oil like Amla or
Brahmi and then apply. Shampoo after 20 minutes. Your hair will gain a
superb gloss and color. Do this only once a week.

    Henna Conditioners

The Henna conditioners give color sheen and body to the hair.

    • For oily hair, mix Henna with 2 tablespoons of yogurt and a pinch of
sugar to a light paste. Add a bit of water if the paste is thick. Apply
on hair and leave it on for twenty minutes. Rinse it out with clear
      water.
    • For dry hair, mix Henna in a tablespoon of oil and enough warm milk
to make a paste. Apply and leave on for twenty minutes. Rinse it out
      later.

    Avocado and Mayonnaise Mask
This Deep Conditioner works on Dry and Damaged Hair.
Mash one Avocado with 1/2 Cup Mayonnaise. Apply to hair evenly,
put on a shower cap and leave for about half an hour. Rinse off. This
Hair Mask helps you get Soft and Shiny Hair. You can also add some coconut milk to this recipe.

    Banana and Olive Oil Mask
Mash one very ripe banana and pass through strainer to make sure it is as smooth as possible. Mix with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 1 tbsp of honey until smooth. Apply
generously throughout your hair. Cover with a shower cap or plastic
wrap and allow to sit for 20-30 minutes. Follow-up with a shampoo and
    rinse.

    Conditioner
    1 teaspoon baby oil
    1 egg yolk
    1 cup water.

    Beat the egg
yolk until its frothy, add the oil then beat again. Add to the water.
Massage into the scalp and throughout your hair. Rinse well.

Other oils to use on hair:

    • Apricot Kernel Oil
    • Avocado Oil
    • Broccoli Seed Oil
    • Castor Oil
    • Coconut oil
    • Golden Jojoba Oil
    • Macadamia Nut Oil
    • Meadowfoam Seed Oil

The Festival of Jagannath is celebrated by Hindus who flock to the city of Puri on India’s eastern coast. Jagannath is a benevolent incarnation of Vishnu, lord of creation. The day before the festival, three huge statues of the god, his brother, and his sister, are adorned with crowns of flowers and golden robes before being transported to three floats. The following morning the floats are pulled to a building called Jagannath’s garden house. Helping to pull the god’s float brings his blessings to the faithful. The statues remain in the garden house for seven days while pilgrims feast and dance. On the eighth day, the statues are returned to the floats and pulled back to the temple.

This day is sacred to Vidar, son of Odin and god of forests. Leather workers should put aside all their scraps for his boot which will enable him to successfully fight the wolf Fenris during Ragnarok.

Rain today meant rainy weather for the next thirty days.

In ancient Rome, the goddess Minerva (patroness of wisdom and the arts, and a deity of battle) was honored annually on this date at her sacred festival, the Lesser Quinquatrus of Minerva.

  • WCFQ 8b: Under Pressure

Do you think that teenagers are now falling under peer pressure much easier than before?
    azn_chewynezzz

I think people have always been victims of peer pressure. We’re a herding species. We gather and by our activities determine the norm. Like any species which is prone to communal living instead of solitary existence, some members of the group will always be on the periphery while others maintain the core… but no group is completely static in its makeup. The dynamics are constantly changing, and so the core and the periphery exchange importance as new ideas evolve and become important to the welfare of the group.

So… peer pressure is alive and well, but I don’t think it influences teens or adults in any greater number than it ever has. The ideas which have gained importance in this era may have shifted considerably from what they were decades ago, but the same number of people are still caught between the pressures of the core and the periphery.

Currently, we have the previous generation trying to maintain their values and goals. They are the core. Then there is the current generation attempting to define themselves by new ideation concerning our raison d’ etre. Why are we here? What are we doing to ourselves and the world? What kind of world do we want to leave for the next generation? Then we have the future generation, children and young adults, who are actually the focus of most of the peer pressure. They are the ones who decide what do do with the core beliefs of the previous generation and the evolving beliefs of the current generation until it is their turn to seek definition for the human race.

This is the way it’s always been and so long as we gather together as separate “herds” in our organizations, cities, and nations, we will continue to be subject to the plethora of memes tied to those groups. When we apply labels to ourselves based on race, creed, sex, or aspiration, we allow the commonly held beliefs associated with those labels to exert pressure on how we are perceived under the illusion of those labels. No one is free of peer pressure, no matter how much of a trend setter they consider themselves to be. From the core of our species to its periphery, we are shaped by natural (ecological) and man-made (societal) pressures… these are like the gravity that holds us together much like the sun is held by its own internal forces. Those who choose to throw off the pressures imposed by the commonly held mores of society (the peripheral group) are a constant threat to the existence of the group, but both groups have their purpose. With only the peripheral group in charge, there is anarchy, but with only the core group in charge, there is stagnation and decay.

  • Modern Coliseums

As I was preparing my lunch today, my mother’s boyfriend my stepdad was watching Jerry Springer. It occurred to me that day time talk shows, like Jerry Springer, are the modern equivalent of the Roman coliseums… with audiences calling for blood even as the “guests” cut at one another with their words and deeds. We try to act as if we are so superior to our ancient ancestors, but we really have not come so far as we like to think. It makes me wonder if, back in the day, the coliseums had conscientious objectors just as today we have people who refuse to watch any daytime television or television at all. I know I’d rather read a book than watch the garbage on tv. There’s nothing I watch with any regularity any more. In fact, I’d say it’s been a good week since I turned the tv on for more than a few seconds to check the time or weather forecast. I’d rather listen to my IPod than the tv.

My dependence upon my IPod makes me think of those who have criticized them and personalized technology because they say it isolates people from one another. I suppose they’d rather go back to the 80s and have me carry a “boombox” on my shoulder so I could share my music with everyone?? heh Still, I have to admit that I am a bit inclined to remove myself from society and insulate myself in my own little world. But I am as much inclined to observe society as it passes me by as I am to ignore it. That said… I’m sharing an A-Z music list as I’ve seen a few other people doing lately. See, I share! I’m not that misanthropic! lol

If you could bring ONE person back from the dead, who would it be and why?
    RunningWithThePack

If I could bring one person back from the dead… I’m afraid I’d have to be selfish about this. I’d like to bring my grandfather back, my mother’s father. He died shortly after my second birthday, and I have absolutely no memory of him. But from everything I’ve been told about him, he was a very Good man. I miss that I cannot remember him. My mother misses him terribly and he’s been dead over 30 years now. I guess you never stop missing a parent.

I think if he had not died, my childhood would have been Very different. My whole life would probably have been very different, and I would not be the person I am today. Maybe better, I don’t know. But I would have liked to have had one man in my life to look up to. I don’t really have a bad opinion of men in general, but I do have trust issues. I can even speculate that my mother would not have remarried. My sister would probably not be so needy when it comes to men because our grandfather would have filled the role of father-figure. I would probably not have a brother… not sure how I feel about that. He’s a pain in the…. posterior most of the time, but I couldn’t say how much of that is his father’s fault. I probably would have stayed in school and at the very least, I’d have had someone who expressed pride in my achievements.

But mostly, I’d just like to get to know him like my mom did. Like my father’s mother, my grandfather’s father also ran out on him when he was four, but he never let that make him self-centered or a bully. You always hear that little girls want to grow up and marry someone just like their dad, and my mom kind of did, except my dad didn’t learn the same lessons from his childhood that my grandfather did.

This day honored Fortuna in her temple in Rome. Fortuna or Fors (Fors Fortuna) is an Italian goddess identified in classical times with Tyche. Her ancient temple was in the Forum Boarium at Rome.
As Concordia, she was honored by Livia.

The Matralia, festival of mothers, honors Matuta or more usually Mater Matuta, an old Italian goddess of dawn and of birth. Also a goddess of harbors and of the sea, she was identified with the Greek Leucothea. A matron who had not been married before was allowed to place a wreath on the statue of the goddess. The women would first pray for the well-being of their nephews and nieces, and then for their own children. This custom came from the myth of Ino-Leucothea, who acted as foster-mother to Dionysus, the son of her sister Semele. She was left offerings of flowers and yellow cakes (saffron?) referred to as Testuacium ‘pot-cake’ because they were baked in a heated earthen testu pot.

In 1912, spiritualist-medium Ruth Montgomery was born in Princeton, Indiana. Her interest in the world of the occult began in 1956, when she first began attending seances. She has written numerous best-selling occult books and is famous for her gift of communicating with spirit guides through automatic writing.

In 1604, James I Witchcraft Act repealed Elizabeth I’s 1563 mandate to replace it with stricter laws.
