  • WCFQ 45d: A Career in dilettantism

What career would you pursue if money
(salary wise and/or education spending, for example)
    was not an issue?

Hmmm, Career implies a set course, and if I did not need to worry about money or education, there are a lot of things I’d do. Foremost would be my writing… I’d finally have the time to devote to it, money being no obstacle. I’d probably sleep most of the day and stay up most of the night writing. I’d surf the web (okay I already do this) and ponder the imponderables that I find in News of the Weird posts. Like the “genetically modified goat that produces super-strong spider’s silk” and why a goat would need super strong spider silk to begin with (pictures spider-goat hanging from a strand of silk as it looks for improbably edible things to chew on). At first I read, “super strong spider milk” and was even more confused. Goat milk is supposedly the closest thing to human milk one can find, so super strong spider-goat milk would be extra healthy maybe?? o.O

I’d travel the world researching long lost forgotten lore in ancient tomes in dead languages which I would of course have to learn. I’d hire someone to help me break into the Vatican vaults, film it live, and not only make mounds of money but finally reveal what secrets the Vatican has seen fit to suppress for the “good of humanity” and good PR. I’d find Atlantis and Mu and Lemuria and Ys and any other “lost continents” I’ve forgotten. I’d find out what unknown alien intelligence is causing the magnetic anamoly in Lake Vostok, Antarctica… a liquid water lake which has been covered by ice for at least the last 500,000 years, if not millions. It used to be the Big story on the web, but nothing much has been written on it since 2007. Cover up? Hmmm? (Oy, I love conspiracy theories.)

I’d see to it that the Moon and Mars were colonized, and that colonizing ships were created to send the more dissident portions of Earth’s populations (religious zealots, obnoxious politicians, oil moguls, and other dangerous criminals) into space. Probably not all together… who knows what kind of society they would form! Space pirates probably, very confused ones.

So, I guess like Heidenkind, I’d settle for being a dilettante. .

    May 2nd

This is the fifth day of the Floralia.

The goddess Elena or Helen is goddess of the holy road (the four royal roads of Britain). The old straight tracks and causeways of Wales are her holy roads called Sarn Helen.

In England, an annual fertility festival is held featuring a man on a hobbyhorse, a fiendish mask, and pointed hat.

Tane Matsuri is Rice Planting today and tomorrow in Japan.

Princess Ysahodhara, the wife of Buddha is honored in India with an annual festival.

Bona Dea, the good goddess of Roman tradition, was honored with fires tonight and tomorrow as the goddess of women’s mysteries. The Arvales honored Bona Dea in her grove with a highly complicated ceremony. This included a dance in the temple of the goddess to which they sang a hymn so antiquated that few understood its meaning. Secret offerings were made to her, and sows were sacrificed to promote fertility.

Osiris Goes Forth from His mountain on the 18th day of Payni according to the Egyptian calendar.

  • I would teach or do whatever I want. Doing what I want is a good decision.

  • You know what I always thought would be a great job?  Writing news stories like that one for Weekly World News!  LOL  That would be totally cool.  How does a person get started doing that, I wonder?

You could hire me to film you breaking in to the Vatican vaults.  I would totally be there.    One of my professors did research in the Vatican archives (or one of their archives), so I could totally hook you up.   And as a bonus, the Swiss Guards are surprisingly hawt.  I know you don’t care, I’m just saying… it’s nice scenery.

Have you read Angels & Demons?  I totally loved that book, and the only reason was because Langdon got to go into the Vatican’s secret archives.   Oh, and he also went into the catacombs underneath St. Peter’s Basilica–that was pretty cool, too.  Like really, really cool, actually.

  • I would absolutely love to be a travel writer. I think that would be amazing!

  • Probably not all together… who knows what kind of society they would form! Space pirates probably, very confused ones. I almost spewed my water! Thanks!

Since Heidenkind has you covered on the whole Vatican thing, I’ll step aside.  *pouts* *dramatically hangs head forward*

I would love to learn some dead languages. I was just thinking about that the other day actually. Too cool.

  • @WondersCafe - I’ve thought about teaching too. When I was in college, one of my teachers said I should be a teacher after doing a presentation. I like sharing information with people who want to learn, but so many people in a learning environment are just there to kill time it depresses me. I don’t think I could be a teacher for long.

@heidenkind - Alright. If one of us ever wins the lottery, we’re breaking into the Vatican to hunt for alien bones or angel wings and any books that weren’t burned at the council of Nicea. Another cool place to explore would be the necropolis under Paris. We could just travel around the world, poking into places people don’t want us. lol There’s a show on the History channel called Undergrounds or something similar. It’s all about this guy going around the world and exploring tunnels and forgotten underground cities. It’s really cool, but sometimes gross. heh

I haven’t read any Dan Brown. I tend to shy away from anything that popular.

@TheCheshireGrins - Hmm, I would not be the stereotypical travel writer though. I’d be like an underground travel writer who only writes about places people aren’t supposed to go.

@Broom_Service - Yay! I love causing spit-takes! It’s like the best compliment to a joke. lol And you can totally come debunk the Vatican with us. You can tell your husband it’s a girls night out, unless he wants to come too.   He can beat up a Swiss Guard or two for Heidenkind’s “collection” of haut guys. lol So the plan is, we break into the Vatican when/if one of us wins the lottery. Steal any books in a language we can’t identify, and then spend the rest of the money learning whatever dead language it’s written in. heheh

  • @harmony0stars - That would be exciting! You could go into Burma or North Korea or someplace that not a lot of people would be able to go!

  • @harmony0stars -  Cool. How many of us are playing the lottery right now?

  • @Broom_Service - @harmony0stars - I can’t play the lottery.  I’m not old enough.  Hahahahahaha!

So that sounds like a plan!  Should I book our tickets to Rome now?   I have heard about the Paris catacombs, and I think they would be so cool to go into!  I heard there are parties in them at night–just think how awesomely Goth it would be to go to one those!  LOL  I was bummed that I learned about them after I had been to Paris, because they would have definitely been on my itinerary to visit.

  • @heidenkind - @harmony0stars -   Woohoo! Harmony0stars must have won the lottery for us if you’re ready to book tickets. Should I pack yet?

  • @Broom_Service - Yes.  Be sure to pack for hot weather.

We don’t need that much money to get to Rome… once we actually get there, we can travel for free!  I saw it on the internets.

  • @heidenkind -  Good thing you like to surf the web.

  • @Broom_Service - LOL  I know, right?  I even know a fairly decent hotel to stay in that’s a block from the Vatican.

  • @heidenkind - That’s so funny.

  • @Broom_Service - Hmmmm.  You don’t think I’m being serious?

    You make bunny cry…..

  • That’s quite a plan you got there.  I think I would just learn, though if I was going to learn so much it would be silly not to contribute.  So I’d learn and write.

  • @heidenkind - No, I know you’re serious. I just find it funny. I’m sowwy.

  • @Broom_Service - @heidenkind - Ok… so it’s settled then. One of us wins the lottery. We’re going to Rome and maybe the Paris catacombs… and anywhere else that strikes our fancy. Heidenkind is in charge of travel arrangements. Broom Service and I will figure out what we’re in charge of later.

  • I saw a great deal of helpful information above!
