  • Shampoo successes and free samples

Just a little update on my hair.... It's Much better since I stopped using regular shampoo. It really loves the stuff I cooked up on my stove, and the new washing routine. I only shampoo once a week, and condition every other day. I haven't brushed it since I started; I just comb through it with my fingers while I'm still in the shower. On the off days when I don't wash it at all, I've made a spray of 3 cups of water I distilled mixed with 10 drops of Rosemary oil, two drops of Lavender, and 1 tbsp of Jojoba. I shake it up really well and then spray it on my hair until it's thoroughly damp. This is mainly to hydrate it... the oils help bond the moisture into the hair so that my curls stay all day. I've never used gels or hairspray or a blowdryer, so my hair has always been soft, but by the end of the day, my curls would be mere waves. I honestly can't remember my hair being this nice since I was a little kid.

Now I feel like Curly Sue, and if my hair was soft before, it's like handling feathers now. So... I recommend this hair routine for anyone with naturally curly hair. It really works! It works so well in fact, that I've been thinking about maybe making custom shampoos and selling them. I feel like I should be saying something like, "I'm not just the president of the hair club for women, I'm also a client." heh If I do decide to start making shampoos for others though, I'll have to get testers for the different formulas I come up with. Just cause it works well for me, doesn't mean it would work well for everyone with every hairtype. So... if anyone wants samples, send me a private message with your snailmail and hairtype (fine/coarse, colored/natural color/graying, curly/wavy/straight, and any hair/scalp issues or allergies you have) and when I cook up my next batch I'll send you a sample to try. Then just let me know how it goes.

I've put off making a conditioner so far because I don't have an empty container to put it in. Currently I'm using a Suave Naturals conditioner which has no silicone in it. When I empty the bottle, I'll be peeling the labels off and reusing it to hold my cream rinse experiments.

  • You should definitely start making your own brand of shampoos and conditioners!  I would definitely try them.  You could sell them at the local natural grocers or a farmer's market.

Since your entry on conditioners, I've been trying "natural" hair conditioners, and they have not been working out well at all.  They leave my hair much more tangled and not as shiny as the conditioner I was using before (Brilliant Brunette).  I'm thinking about just going back to that.  The best one I've tried so far is Origins Ginger Cream conditioner (that my mom bought for me because it's so expensive), and that's leaving my hair looking sort of meh.  Very frustrating.

  • It is amazing what we are able to do on our own.

    Blessings~

  • It's a really helpful hair routine! Not sure how well it'd work for me cuz I'm black and I've got all these kinks to work out, though (literally)...*grins* I wash mine once every couple of weeks and usually just braid it in the meantime, I'm too low-maintenance to perm or really style it (just call me lazy). lol Still, whatever works for your hair! Keep passin' that knowledge on...^_^

  • i'm glad you found a hair "regiment" you can be happy with.  I have a little problem with my hair too.  i have psoriasis, psboria, and exzema on the back of my neck and knees.  so i have to wash my hair every morning wheather i want to or not.  i use to take the presciption stuff but decided it was probably being obsorbed into my brain the way the liquid worked and would evenutally cause me to have some weird "something" in my head.  so now i do nothing.  the good thing is it hasn't spread anywhere else but it hasn't gone away either.  i don't kow if you can make anything for me but if you think you can i'll contact you too.  i have thin fine strait hair.  with skin problems

  • I'm glad your hair regimen is working so well.  It sounds healthy and wonderful.  I'm still a little skepitcal about only shampooing once a week.  I shampoo two or three times a week because if I do so any less, my hair looks really oily at the roots.  Maybe I fuss with it too much?  I brush it twice a day most days - sometimes as little as one or as many as four or five, depending on if it's down or in a braid.  My hair is coarse and wavy - it can get oily at the roots and dry at the ends.  Also, my scalp near my forehead has been very sensitive and flaky of late.  Haha, I guess I could message you all of this and request a sample of your stuff.  I think I'll wait and see how my new organic stuff works after a couple of weeks.

  • @heidenkind - I've also noticed that natural conditioners don't detangle as well. Which just means that I have to be more patient as I work through the knots. On the other hand, since I stopped using the conditioners with the silicone in them, my hair has been thicker, curlier, softer and just feels healthier. So it's definitely a trade-off.

@Madoushi_Shoujo - In all honestly, my hair is very similar. I can braid it and not put any ties in and it stays that way all day long and even through the night if I don't unbraid it before going to bed. If you're not washing it, it would still probably benefit from a spray consisting of jojoba oil and water, just for the moisture. Unlike regular curly hair though, I've read that kinky hair should be thoroughly conditioned (if you have the time to pamper yourself for an hour, you could do some intensive conditioning and wrap your head in plastic wrap for twenty minutes before rinsing it out), rinsed, and brushed out in small sections while it's still wet.

@NightlyDreams - I'm not sure what psboria is, but I can probably come up with something for the psoriasis and eczema. Not a problem.

  • @BoureeMusique - You should try just conditioning when you wash, no shampoo. It's not that you're not washing your hair, just that you need to skip the shampoo. The conditioner cleanses the hair too. It just doesn't lather as much. It does sound like you're brushing a little too much though. Overbrushing can lead to split ends. It's probably one of the reasons your ends are so dry. Ideally, with curly hair you shouldn't brush at all. You should work through your hair with your fingers so that you don't kill the curls. Also, once your hair's natural oils are restored, the ends and roots should be equalized. But you could try putting extra conditioner on the roots or even making an avacado/mayonaise "mask" for your hair and wrapping it up in plastic wrap and a towel for twenty minutes before rinsing it out for deep conditioning. There was a recipe I posted last time for an avocado hair mask I think.

  • That sounds great.  I may actually listen to you this time   I thought I read somewhere that conditioning your roots is a bad thing - that the conditioner makes the hair fall out or something.  I can't remember where I read that, but I thought it was a long hair site.  I guess my hair is curlier than it is wavy.  I'll try the conditioning thing tonight and see what happens.  Thanks

  • @harmony0stars - That's true, my hair has had a lot more volume and curl since I started using the natural conditioners.  But I try to keep the fluffiness down as much as possible because otherwise I look like Rosanna Anna from SNL.  :)

  • @BoureeMusique - well, supposedly we lose about 100 hairs a day. Personally I can lose three strands of hair and it will still look like a lot in the drain. Since it's so long, when it's in a wad, it will look like I should be bald already. lol

@heidenkind - I know what you mean. This time of year with all the humidity, if you don't braid it, you're out of luck. Still, before I started with this new regimen, the curl would start close to the ends of my hair because the weight of all the chemicals in the shampoo and conditioner weighed it down. Now that the curl starts closer to my scalp, when I braid it, you can still see it has some texture and curl closer to my face as well as towards the ends.
